v0.7.0

Compare Source

v0.6.9

Compare Source

v0.6.8: protoc-gen-openapi and export improvements.

Compare Source

This contains several improvements to protoc-gen-openapi from @jeffsawatzky , including the ability to use proto annotations to add fragments to generated OpenAPI documents (#324). It also adds some missing OpenAPI compiler code that Jeff uncovered when testing the new fragment overlay feature - maps of strings were not properly exported in ToRawInfo() methods in both OpenAPI packages (v2 and v3). Thanks, Jeff!

v0.6.7

v0.6.6: Module cleanup

Compare Source

We had a series of problems related to a multi-module configuration and its reversion that all now appear to be fixed in this release. Individual components in the cmd directory are now (again) part of the main module and can be independently installed with the following:

go install github.com/google/gnostic/cmd/disco@latest
go install github.com/google/gnostic/cmd/parse-linter-output@latest
go install github.com/google/gnostic/cmd/petstore-builder@latest
go install github.com/google/gnostic/cmd/protoc-gen-jsonschema@latest
go install github.com/google/gnostic/cmd/protoc-gen-openapi@latest
go install github.com/google/gnostic/cmd/report@latest
go install github.com/google/gnostic/cmd/report-messages@latest
go install github.com/google/gnostic/cmd/vocabulary-operations@latest

Verified with Go 1.16, 1.17, and 1.18beta1.

v0.6.4

Compare Source

v0.6.3

Compare Source

v0.6.2: Single-module repo with retraction of v0.6.0 multimodule experiment

Compare Source

This adds a retract statement to go.mod to exclude v0.6.0 from dependency updates. Thanks @morphar and @shenqidebaozi for quickly catching and fixing problems with the multimodule configuration!

v0.6.1: Single-module repo

Compare Source

v0.6.0: Multimodule repo: apps are in "cmd". protoc-gen-openapi improvements. protoc-gen-jsonschema.

Compare Source

This renames the former apps directory to cmd and adds a go.mod for each cmd subdirectory. These directories contain demonstrations and various gnostic-related applications, and putting each in a separate module clarifies dependencies and reduces the apparent dependencies of gnostic itself (as listed in the top-level go.mod). Thanks @shenqidebaozi for making this change and @morphar for advising.

This also includes significant improvements to protoc-gen-openapi from @morphar and @tonybase and a new protoc-gen-jsonschema pluigin contributed by @morphar.

v0.5.7

Compare Source

v0.5.6

Compare Source

v0.5.5: Update protos for Go protoc plugin compatibility, add some fields previously dropped by gnostic-generator

Compare Source

v0.5.4

Compare Source

v0.5.3: apps/protoc-gen-openapi and JSON marshaling improvements

Compare Source

This adds a gnostic-based protoc plugin that generates OpenAPI for transcoded gRPC APIs. See AIP-127 for a description of transcoding.

It also includes JSON marshaling improvements and tests from @bvwells.

v0.5.2: Vocabulary Analysis, Error messages include line numbers

Compare Source

This update includes API vocabulary analysis features developed during the Summer of 2020 and improvements to error reporting that include line/column numbers for errors and more concise reporting of unmatched schemas. A few corner-case crashes were also fixed.

v0.5.1: Fix problem reading Google Discovery Documents

Compare Source

This fixes a minor error that caused Google Discovery Documents to fail to load after the yaml.v3 update.

v0.5.0: Update gnostic to yaml.v3: cleaner parsing, line number reporting

Compare Source

This release updates gnostic to use the yaml.v3 library and the yaml.Node class, which allows us to access line and column numbers of tokens during parsing.

This release upgrades the dependency only and does not include line number reporting.

This change will break clients that directly call auto-generated functions to create OpenAPIv2, OpenAPIv3, and Discovery structures. This is addressed in #195.

v0.4.2: Metrics and Protocol Buffer dependency updates

Compare Source

This release provides a tagged version that includes the new metrics directory of protos for API metrics (currently computed using plugins) and updates embedded generated protobuf code to version 3.12.3 of protoc (which hopefully resolves #170).

  • support Canonical mode with MissingFielder
  • robust handling of codecgen caveats wrt Canonical|CheckCircularRef flags and MissingFielder implementations
  • robust handling of transient values, where we track if a value has internal pointers and handle appropriately
  • reduce use of global values: all in-use values are scoped to an Encoder or Decoder
  • implement stateManager for Encoder/Decoder, supporting capture, reset and restore functions.
  • side encoding or decoding can now reuse an Encoder/Decoder, leveraging state management to
capture its state, do something else, then restore its state and continue
  • support running all tests in parallel, so we can shake out any concurrency issues
  • Fix issue in rpc where writer was not being flushed, causing a hang where reader was
    waiting on an encoded value
  • Support shallow copies of a Handle, to support parallel execution where we need to
    temporarily change some Handler fields

This is the best release yet. Please try it out and share your experiences.

v1.2.4: 1.2.4

Compare Source

Release 1.2.4

This is a production release of go-codec.

This is a very important release, which focused on optimization across the board to
ensure that go-codec is the most performant library for popular encoding formats.

Optimizations across the board include:

  • optimization by eliding allocation where not necessary e.g.
    • when encoding non-addressable value with ptr receiver
    • map iteration/access
    • decoding floats
    • creating slices or sub-slices (removing temporary slice allocated on heap)
    • decoding map keys if both key and value kinds are scalars
    • decoding map values if value kind is a scalar
  • better reuse of pool'ed []byte(s)
  • leveraging mapXXX_fastXXX calls where possible
  • better inlining (where applicable) e.g. arrayStart, mapStart, etc
  • support complex numbers (where we treat complex numbers as floats with imaginary part = 0)
  • optimize encoding and decoding arrays, including using fast-paths for slices as applicable
  • use runtime's growslice algorithm when growing arrays for better performance
  • optimize nextValueBytes and swallow so they do not allocate when applicable e.g.
do not allocate/copy bytes if swallow is called or you were decoding from a []byte (just return a sub-slice)
  • optimize isEmptyStruct to just compare if value == zero'es (instead of field by field),
    simulating comparing to zero value.

To guarantee better fairness in benchmarking, we did the following:

  • use common types in benchmarks and common methods to ensure fairness in benchmarks
  • run benchmarks with ZeroCopy=true and (MapValue|Interface|SliceElement)Reset = true,
aligning with how other libraries operate by default

With these changes, we have reflection-based mode performing within 25% of codecgen,
with similar allocation numbers as codecgen. For example, encoding typically has just 1
allocation without codecgen (just as in codecgen).

This is the best release yet. Please try it out and share your experiences.

v1.2.3: 1.2.3

Compare Source

This is a production release of go-codec.

This optimizes decoding for zero-copy mode when decoding from a string or []byte.

With this mode, we see 50% reduction in allocation in both codecgen and normal execution,
and this gives performance better than other libraries (easyjson, json-iterator, etc)
while providing much more features and supported formats (json, cbor, msgpack, simple, etc).

v1.2.2: 1.2.2

Compare Source

This is a production release of go-codec.

This includes a fix for decoding into nested anonymous fields (github issue #350).

v1.2.1: 1.2.1

Compare Source

This is a production release of go-codec.

This includes a fix for codecgen when using omitempty (github issue #344).

v1.2.0: 1.2.0

Compare Source

This is a production release of go-codec.

Today marks 1 full year after the 11th day of the 11th month of last year,
a very very special day in my life.

On this very special day, we release the latest patch release of v1.1 and it
matches with the first release of v1.2.0 of go-codec.

This release should be about 10% faster during decode than previous releases.

Beyond performance, the focus was on cleaning up the codebase while maintaining support
for much earlier releases of go, and supporting gccgo.

Changes

  • support gccgo
  • improve performance in looking up fast-path functions or cached struct information
  • optimize json's encoding and decoding of numbers (integers and floats) and strings
  • optimize base reading primitive functions, to reduce pointer-chasing
  • optimize map iteration and lookup

See benchmark results run on a very complicated struct full of embedded types, with multiple nested levels.
Each struct value encodes as 47K of tightly packed json or 37K of binary msgpack or cbor.

The main goal has always been to provide the most feature-rich and performant package
for encoding and decoding of multiple popular binary and text formats in a consistent way.

We believe we continue to achieve that!

v1.1.14: 1.1.14

Compare Source

This is a production release of go-codec.

Today marks 1 full year after the 11th day of the 11th month of last year,
a very very special day in my life.

On this very special day, we release the latest patch release of v1.1 and it
matches with the first release of v1.2 of go-codec.

This release should be about 10% faster during decode than previous releases.

Beyond performance, the focus was on cleaning up the codebase while maintaining support
for much earlier releases of go, and supporting gccgo.

Changes

  • support gccgo

We believe we continue to achieve that!

v1.1.13: 1.1.13

Compare Source

This is a production release of go-codec.

This release should be about 10% faster during decode than previous releases.

Changes

  • 10% faster on decode and encoding if omitempty is configured
  • improved performance in looking up struct field values when decoding structs
  • codecgen: support generating reduced code for json only, omitempty support, or to_array support
  • omitempty: support for IsCodecEmpty, a custom way of checking if a value is empty
  • omitempty: optimize comparing to zero'es to check if a value is empty
  • stack overflow/circular references: optimize check by push/popping a stack

See benchmark results run on a very complicated struct full of embedded types, with multiple nested levels.
Each struct value encodes as 47K of tightly packed json or 37K of binary msgpack or cbor.

The main goal has always been to provide the most feature-rich and performant package

  • remove mode of reading the next value in the stream by decoding into a throwaway value and tracking bytes read
  • clean up code to enable better inlining for better performance
  • fix and expand tests to get richer code coverage;
go test -cover reports > 90%
  • and many general performance improvements ...

The main goal has always been to provide the most feature-rich and performant package
for encoding and decoding of multiple popular binary and text formats in a consistent way.

We believe we continue to achieve that!

Compare Source

This is a production release of go-codec.

The main benefits are a number of bug fixes and some performance improvements:

  • reduce binary size by 30% by reducing types for which we generate fast-path functions
  • support OptimumSize encode option: cbor uses to encode floats in smallest size e.g. binary16
  • decode stream nil value in mapping as a nil pointer in memory (previously set to zero value)
  • validate that malformed streams can be decoded without causing stack overflow or out of memory errors
  • json: return EOF in all scenarios when end of stream is reached (previously returned other error sometimes)
  • json: handle malformed unicode correctly in corner cases
  • and some general performance improvements ...

The main goal has always been to provide the most feature-rich and performant package
for encoding and decoding of multiple popular binary and text formats in a consistent way.

We believe we have achieved that!

open-telemetry/opentelemetry-ebpf-instrumentation (go.opentelemetry.io/obi)

v0.15.2

Compare Source

Overview

v0.15.2 supersedes the unpublished v0.15.0 and v0.15.1 releases. The v0.15.0 release was blocked by BPF verifier failures; v0.15.1 included that correction but its artifact build failed when version discovery selected the Collector tag. This patch release is intended to ship the release-pipeline correction together with the features and upgrade notes originally prepared for v0.15.0.

Release corrections
  • Uses the selected core release tag consistently for binary archives, generated-source archives, Java SBOMs, and checksums. Core and Collector tags sharing a commit must not let git describe substitute a Collector version into release artifact paths. (#3770)
  • Restores BPF program loading after verifier loop widening by preserving socket-copy bounds, bounding packet hex writes, and separating HTTP/1 traceparent scanning from decoding. Capture limits and trace-context propagation behavior are preserved. (#3759)
  • Prepares core v0.15.2 and collector/v0.15.2, updating the receiver dependency, OATS module references, and Collector Builder example. The telemetry schema advances to 0.15.2 with the existing transformation history; no additional renames are needed. (#3775)
Highlights
  • Ships go.opentelemetry.io/obi/collector as a separate module at collector/v0.15.2, together with root v0.15.2. The receiver keeps its existing import path and an independent v0 release line. (#3748)
  • Captures manual spans through the embedded Go Auto SDK, expands .NET route harvesting and CPU/heap metrics, and adds AWS Route53 endpoint name resolution. (#3678, #3655, #3647, #3697, #3600)
  • Prevents trace-context injection into sockets misclassified as HTTP/2, fixes metric-label tuple collisions and duplicate target.info counts, and keeps the Collector receiver running after its Start context ends. (#3715, #3523, #3665, #3745)
  • Adds Config v2 metric-feature selection, ring-buffer write/failure counters, correct OTLP http/json trace encoding, and security dependency updates. (#3691, #3631, #3728, #3732, #3733, #3734, #3735)
Release-impacting changes
  • Collector upgrades: publish both v0.15.2 and collector/v0.15.2. The root module removes the receiver package; the nested module provides it at the same import path and requires root v0.15.2. RC tags alone do not support discovery through plain go get -u.
  • Config v2 protocol enabled.metrics: false now suppresses that protocol's span metrics and service graphs in both exporters. The migration CLI reports coverage it cannot preserve; Config v1 behavior is unchanged.
  • server.address on HTTP client spans and http.client.* metrics drops the Host header's port; server.port and url.full retain it. IP hosts follow unresolved-name handling, and Kubernetes Service hosts with ports resolve to the service and namespace, changing peer/service-graph names where applicable.
  • PrometheusConfig.Registry is removed. Embedders must configure a Prometheus HTTP port instead of supplying a registry.
  • GenAI client names use the emitted operation and request model, or data-source ID for retrieval. Anthropic message becomes chat on spans and metrics; gateways use names such as chat gpt-4o-mini instead of HTTP names. Missing request models/data-source IDs are omitted from names, with no response-model fallback; unknown operations use _OTHER. OTLP GenAI metrics omit missing gen_ai.request.model rather than emitting an empty value; Prometheus output is unchanged.
  • Database spans without an operation use their target or database-system name; SQL spans can use a namespace alone, and MongoDB/Couchbase spans without a collection use their namespace. SQL query summaries still take precedence. Elasticsearch/OpenSearch spans without an index or cluster use the requested/resolved host and port instead of peer IP; Couchbase SQL++ host targets use the reported server address. Native database names retain their existing host-cardinality limits, and Redis names exclude the namespace.
  • GraphQL server names drop GraphQL; AWS S3/SQS names use S3./SQS. prefixes, and S3 without an operation uses aws-api. Reply-only ONC RPC spans use onc_rpc. These name changes also affect span-metric labels.
  • ONC RPC spans carry rpc.method as {program}/{procedure} when a CALL was captured, and rpc.response.status_code when a REPLY was captured. RPC duration metrics use the same method format, omit it without a CALL, and omit response status without a REPLY instead of reporting success.
  • gRPC names and rpc.method values drop the leading slash, including RPC-duration and span-metric labels. Invalid/unread paths use span name grpc and method _OTHER; captured raw paths are available as rpc.method_original.
  • New default metric attributes split series: db.collection.name on database duration metrics, server.port on RPC client duration, and error.type on failed RPC server duration. Elasticsearch/OpenSearch index names may increase cardinality; exclude the collection attribute if needed.
  • AWS SNS spans drop rpc.system.name and rpc.method; SNS.{operation} names and cloud.region remain.
  • MQTT SUBSCRIBE spans and process metrics use messaging.destination.subscription.name for the filter instead of destination name, and span names drop the filter. Shared subscriptions also emit messaging.consumer.group.name. This conditional rename cannot be expressed by a schema-wide transformation.
  • AMQP OTLP metrics omit empty destinations. Messaging client-duration metrics add default messaging.operation.type; client/process-duration metrics add default subscription name when present. These add Prometheus labels.
  • GraphQL, MCP, and JSON-RPC server spans drop HTTP method/status/route, URL, body-size, user-agent, and OBI response-observation attributes, retaining protocol, address, network, and error attributes. Captured HTTP headers are limited to plain HTTP and GraphQL spans, affecting Go net/rpc JSON-RPC.
  • The registry moves to Weaver definition/2; span reference IDs lose their span. prefix, so old documentation anchors no longer resolve. The published telemetry schema advances to 0.15.2 and retains prior transformations.
